A bargaining model with uncertainty and varying outside opportunities JEL: J51

چکیده
The main purpose of this paper is to propose an alternative way of explaining – within the bargaining theory framework – the stylised fact of flat wages and employment bearing all the adjustment to shocks. Standard models predict this behaviour under the assumptions of a constant elasticity production function and a reservation wage independent of shocks. Once the latter is removed, however, the result holds no more. The proposed two-stage model, in which the second stage involves negotiations over employment after the state of nature is revealed, would allow to recover it as a consequence of the uncertainty agents face when bargaining over wages in the first stage. The model nests other formulations and allows for Pareto efficient and inefficient outcomes, depending on union power, agents' beliefs and the observed state of nature. ∗ Lecturer-researcher at Departamento de Economía, Facultad de Ciencias Sociales, Universidad de la República, Uruguay. Collective bargaining in the public sector and the role of budget determination
This paper considers collective bargaining in a public sector institutional setting. The model demonstrates how budget constraints and hierarchical structure affect the bargaining outcome. A trade union bargains over wage and employment either with an output-maximizing bureau or the bureau’s sponsoring institution. The slope of the contract curve depends on the bargaining level because the budg...

We develop a model of wage bargaining with private information in a duopoly. We investigate how product differentiation and market competition (Bertrand vs. Cournot competition) affect wages and strikes. If bargaining takes place at the industry-level, then both the wage outcome and the strike activity do not depend on the degree of product differentiation whatever the type of market competitio...

Optimal Taxation with Capital Accumulation and Wage Bargaining This study examines optimal taxation in a unionized economy in which households save capital. The main findings are as follows. Judd’s (1985) and Chamley’s (1986) classical results of zero taxation on capital income holds. This is true independently of workers’ savings behaviour or the capitalists’ weight in the social welfare funct...

متن کاملCapital Structure as a Strategic Variable: Evidence from Collective Bargaining
Market power in the hands of a supplier — such as a labor union — affects a firm’s optimal debt policy. If a firm maintains a high level of liquidity, workers may be encouraged to raise wage demands. In the presence of external finance constraints, a firm has an incentive to use the cash flow demands of debt service payments to improve its bargaining position. Using both cross-sectional estimat...
